Cairns Dining Reviews

FNQ Takeaway - "Testing the Takeaways"

A couple of months ago I was given a task of reviewing a broad cross-section of dining establishments in the Cairns region. I started with some of the big name restaurants and eventually I ran out of money. So I headed slightly down-market, and began to have a very enjoyable time. But then I felt guilty that I wasn’t really covering all the bases. What about the takeaway stores? Surely they need to be reviewed from time to time.

So the question is posed. Are all takeaway shops the same, just serving deep fried goodies, cans of coke and a selection of cheap burgers? Or do some rise above the quarry offering supreme lollies to bored children, healthy drinks that invigorate tired adults, and food that cleanses the intestines instead of clogging them?

I have the answer, after many years searching.

No.

No, there is scarce difference between most takeaway stores.
No, most do not serve mouth-watering food.
No, most are not cheap.
No, the selection of drinks, food and lollies never changes.

Typical delicacies served at an FNQ takeaway store include pies, sausage rolls, chicken burgers (that is, a bread roll with chicken inside it… nothing else) coke, bottled water, red skins, hubba bubba, paddle pops and more delicious sugar infested treats.

If you want to stuff something down your throat, aren’t concerned about your health and don’t mind handing over hard cash for hard sugar, get down to your nearest corner store and have a feast.

However, every now and then a take-away store rises from the rabble and provides food that literally bowls you over with quality. Now, I have considered that my expectations when entering a takeaway place are low and so anything vaguely resembling healthy food is a godsend. But I’ve ruled that out. There are a few establishments that are excellent, and I am sure my list is inconclusive. Try these Cairns takeaway shops for an experience you will find refreshingly wonderful.

Kewarra Fish 'N' Chips Kewarra Beach

Excellent fish and chips, a cut above the rest. Kewarra Fish 'N' Chips offer the best FNQ beach food in the region, and also offer gourmet burgers. Delivery from Trinity Beach to Palm Cove operates from Thursday to Sunday, with a minimum order of $20.

The general rule of thumb is that eating from a takeaway store on a consistent and frequent basis can be detrimental to your health. But if you choose wisely, you may not reduce your life expectancy by as much as you realise.
