Sushi Train ReviewTrain keeps rolling alongLately I’ve been plucking raw delicacies from the Sushi Train conveyer belt about every fortnight, and always at lunch. Why? Because it’s in the centre of the city, it is quick, it is tasty and you can always eat something you haven’t tried before.
This is the second CairnsDining review for the Sushi Train and to be honest, there is little reason to be writing it. The calibre of food and service is unchanging, and you always know exactly what you’ll get. But today I ate lunch at the Japanese fast food restaurant and new dishes were floating by my nose that I hadn’t seen before. Not only did this mean my palette experienced new, and sometimes weird, flavours but it also meant my fascination was aroused by the small sculptures passing by.
I ate all the usuals such as raw salmon and raw tuna, California rolls and other small sushi parcels, but also nibbled large things, of which I don’t know their names. One was made of a rice platform covered with puréed tuna, tomato, leeks and avocado. An acquired taste no doubt, but one you have to experience if you want to declare, “I eat Japanese food.”
It’s tempting to grab everything you fancy, and the small plates give the impression you could eat about 20 of them without filling up. But that’s the Japanese curse. I only need about 5 plates to satisfy my grumbling tummy. The price guide hanging on the wall is a philanthropic aspect of the restaurant that I couldn’t do without. Otherwise, the computer I am typing on right now would have already been hocked at the local pawnshop just to pay for lunch.
Every time I eat at Sushi Train, I depart feeling contented and reassured that my most frequently visited lunch spot is still performing to high standards. As I’ve said before, Sushi Train is terrific for a quick hit of Japanese food that is cheap and tasty.
