A la carte is a type of menu. It means you are given a menu with individual dishes listed with separate prices for each dish. You choose your meal, and that is what you receive.
This is distinctively different from the buffet style of dining, where you pay an entrance fee to the restaurant and then choose from whatever food is on offer.
